When chipping within 10 to 40 feet with a eight iron because you want a running ball not high fly ... pretend to throw the ball with your hand to the spot where you want the ball to hit the first time and then roll...don't think about it just pretend and imagine it ...just let your brain register what it would take to get the ball to the flag and then setup with your club and hit it to the spot .... The secret is we are pretty darn accurate when we want to throw a ball with our hand and to transfer that knowledge to the club without really over analysing it. The secret to success is never to think about it much and have the confidence your own brains knows what you want and will do it if you don't over analyse and get it confused with a lot of thinking. "See it ..believe it...then do it"

Thanks for that Sacs. I've been recently using an 8-iron when just off the green and applying more of a putting stroke instead of a chip. Still working on distance control, but yesterday that shot saved me a par on the 11th hole.

Come to think of it, distance control on all my short game shots seems to be the big problem.

I have been using the putting stroke approach to short chips, works great with a gap wedge too for really short chips, when you are short sided and have to clear 3 or 4 feet of fringe - too much to just putt through. Another good short game tip is to keep your right elbow tucked in close, really tight against your right side, on short pitches, say 50 yards and in, and for longer chips where you need to carry maybe 15 yards or more. I had not been doing this consistently myself and had shanked a few of these over the past few months.
Cranky when I can't get out and play

Sounds interesting. I'll try that.
