I started doing this a few weeks ago and it has really helped my short game, especially my chipping but also helps with lobs and short pitches also. Get some of those little orange 'traffic' cones they sell for kids to practice soccer skills with, you can buy them at any sporting good store or discount store for next to nothing, and lay them down at various distances across your back yard (or at the practice green at the club if they will let you) so you can see the open bottom end of the cones. Try chipping at first trying to just hit the cones either on the fly or rolling into them and then after you are able to do that a few times out of 10 try hitting the ball into the open end of the cone. The opening is a little bigger than a regular golf hole but smaller than a chipping net, this really helps with distance control on your chips. You can also hit lobs at these targets and varying the distance on every shot helps to prevent locking in on a distance and is more realistic, on the course you only have one chance to hit it right and it is always easier the second try - so one shot to each distance and then move your position or move the cones and see if you can hit the ball into the cone. I hit 3 out of 4 the other day from about 5 to 20 yards away chipping with a 54 SW.

Cool idea. Bobby Jones used to set his golf towels out on the grass and try to hit shots which landed on them or stopped on them.

Another thing I used to do in the neighborhood was hit full lob shots from my front yard to the neighbors. You HAVE to be good at distance control or you buy the neighbor a new window... haha.

Once in a while a lob shot will hit a hard spot on the ground or a rock and bounce over the fence and down the alley, luckily I have not hit any vehicles yet.

I sometimes put 5 gallon buckets out in the yard and try to chip them in from various distances. Another thing I do is aim for the roof on my kids swing set. When I hit it, it sounds like a gun goes off (and it pisses my wife off) which makes it that much more fun!

That works well weszty for grooving a technique hitting the the same spot - that will make for more consistency, but I like to vary the distance on each shot - I think it helps with distance control. The second shot or putt or chip or whatever is always easier than the first and the third is even easier so to make it more difficult I like to change the distance up on every chip, the more targets the better. What I do then is to hit them back the direction they came from and for that I use one target because the balls aren't in a neat pile like they are starting out they are scattered all over the yard.

I lay the bucket on it's side with a block of wood under it. When I chip into the bucket I get a nice solid "Thunk!!" off the bottom of the bucket. I like to vary distance too, but I also like to see how many in a row I put into the bottom of the bucket.
