I always try to play by the rules, as I understand them. I've read the rule book twice and have used it to try to clarify things that I have happened to me. The rule book is not always easy to interpret. If I'm playing for money I expect everyone to follow the rules. During casual rounds I will have discussions with people concerning the rules, more so to learn from experienced players. There is one guy that I have golfed with on a couple of occasions who routinly cheats (doesn't count penalties, improves his lie and takes free drops). For some reason I have never beaten this guy, but I know better than playing him for money.

What you have to do playing this guy is to both of you keep each other's score and then settle it after. If you have him down for a penalty stroke and he doesn't count one you will be able to at least talk about it. Or you can have a fist fight over it.

The guy happens to be my boss!

HA - good luck with that. Golf with the boss or a customer both are tough, you lose no matter what you do.

Good post, I agree. Sometimes a practice round is a good idea though, there are things you can't really practice anywhere else.

Actually, a good point. Up until March 15th around here it's all practice rounds. The handicap season does not start till then, so the score does not count toward my handicap. I can hit as many shots as I want. I could still count them all, I'd just shoot a 140.

If you play for $$$ then da rules is da rules. I must admit that I have lost almost every golf buddy by being a stickler. Ya, I do expect you to putt that three footer on the 18th green with the match on the line. Actually, there's just one guy who plays it down and expects me to do the same so we played matches together almost exclusively but he just got 15 years in a federal prison for possessing 10 tons of marijuana so, on many levels, my life isn't as much fun as it once was.
