It hurts psychologically practically every round.

Yeah, but when you're out there NOTHING ELSE EXISTS.

If non-golf stuff is in your head on the course I've found it impossible to play. I was playing a couple of years ago with my buddy. He was expecting his first child any moment, and I was deep in the throes of buying a new house. Couldn't get our heads into the game. Walked off the course and sat on the patio for a couple of hours instead.

I would hope everyone has their clubs fit to their swing.

Ah, here is an interesting point. I would love to spend the money and get a set of matched, fitted clubs. For the last couple of seasons I have been taking lessons and working on getting my swing in better shape. I'm not sure how useful it is to get clubs that fit a poor swing. Especially if I'm in the process of changing said swing. When I get to the point where a pro looks at me and says "Your swing is great, your clubs suck", I'll start looking for a custom set. For the time being, I've seen my swing on the video and any problems I have are not caused by my club lie.

I did have a driver custom made a few years back, but I just picked out the head, shaft, and loft. Not really a fitting. Last seasons lesson package came with a club fitting, I hit a few irons with some tape on the soles, he looked at the scuff marks and said the lie was more or less ok. Right now it's just a question of where to allocate my resources. I've recently had my eye on a set of Miura's, but before I spend $1,200 on a set of irons, I'd like to feel...you know, worthy!

Lgsaltz you are right up to a point - if you have already spent a lot of time learning to swing with poorly fitting clubs or if your swing is in flux with changes or not very consistent I agree that having a custom fitted club may not be critical but I would argue that time spent trying to groove a swing with clubs that don't match your physique or strength is self defeating in my opinion. I agree that ideally everyone should start out with clubs that fit them as closely as possible. This is because everything depends on that fit, in my opinion, everything. As soon as you start trying to fit your swing to fit the club you are going off track. You do not need to buy new clubs to do this, you can buy used irons that will match very closely to your exact spec, there are millions of used sets out there on the market. The key is to find out what your own personal specs are. If you are handy you can even build your own, that is pretty easy to do. One of the reasons you see odd looking swings among the old timers out there on the PGA or Champions is exactly this reason, you won't see many Jim Thorpe or Eamon Darcy type swings anymore, because young guys today are not having to mold their swings to fit the club. If you can only afford to play whatever you can get or already have then do it, I never criticize people for being frugal, heck I am a complete and absolute professional cheapskate myself, but the best plan long term for success in golf in my opinion is to have fitted clubs and to have them as soon as possible before bad habits are ingrained into a swing. I have never worked for any equipment company so I have no bias in that regard.
Cranky when I can't get out and play
